My favorite read of the week is Beard Science by Penny Reid.  This book is unique, entertaining, and romantic, but more than any of that, this book has so many important themes that stuck out to me as a reader, as a woman, and also as a mother to daughters.

  1. BE AN INDIVIDUAL: The idea that a person should be who they are and own who they are without apology is prevalent in this book from the “tutoring” between Cletus and Jenn or the Winston family.  This crazy Winston brood know they are a little crazy, love each other for their crazy, and support each other with it.
  2. LIVE YOUR LIFE TO MAKE YOU HAPPY: You only get one life, so you better make it what you want.  The Banana Cake Queen spends her life wanting to be more, and throughout the novel, that reader gets the distinct pleasure of watching her realize this theme.  Watching her make changes to take back  her life and make it what she truly wants makes her a fierce heroine!
  3. FIGHT FOR WHO MATTERS AND WHAT MATTERS TO YOU: So many times  not only in this book but also this series, we see the Winston family rally behind each other, supporting and helping without question or ulterior motivation.  But even more than that, being able to watch Jenn learn this lesson and put it into action is wonderful, because people should know that there are things and people in this life that are worth the risk.
  4. This line from the novel is everything, like I want to print it out and hang it by my daughter’s doors so they see it every day before they leave the house:

“Stay away from the normals, the small-minded people who full their brains with small-minded pursuits, who blend in and keep up with the Joneses.  Those people will tear you down and make you boring. Instead, surround yourself with the weirds.  With the misfits, oddballs, and outcasts.   Because the normals, bless their hearts, have no idea how to have fun.”

I truly cannot explain to you how much I loved this book, these characters, and their story.  My words will never do it justice; however, it is a book you should pick up and read without a doubt.  It will honestly change you, get you thinking and questioning, and it will move you emotionally.  Beard Science is truly one of the best books of the year, and, really, you don’t want to miss out on Cletus’s sausage!

Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.

And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So… what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?

Likely, the last thing you expect.

‘Beard Science’ is the third book in the Winston Brothers series, is a full-length romantic comedy novel, and can be read as a standalone.

About Penny Reid:

pennyreidSEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
