SPEAKEASY (TRUE NORTH #6)
5 SNAPS IN THE SHAPE OF CROWNS
Gah! Sarina Bowen has made me fall in love all over again with the True North series. I swooned over Alec, my heart hurt for May, and I yearned for these two to find a permanent place in each other’s lives.
Alec is more than words. He is fun, seemingly carefree, and his sense of humor draws readers in. Underneath his boyish charm, though, is man who isn’t as okay with his playboy reputation. Alec is a man who wants to be taken seriously, who works tirelessly to make a success of his business, and his humor and passion for life, business, and May is truly captivating. He is officially my favorite True North hero.
May is such a different beast, and unlike most heroines readers encounter in the romance world. She has insecurities but these are tied very much to her past, her alcoholism and her unrequited feelings or her best friend, and it affects how she sees herself and her worth. Seeing her become a “fun May”, as she likes to call herself, is enjoyable, and readers, like Alec, want her to see that is who she is. Her evolution to see her self worth is fantastic, and seeing her blossom with Alec really shows how acceptance and love are healing.
Alec and May make this story. Their chemistry and connection, emotional and physical, is sweet and at times steamy. Sarina Bowen also addresses several issues and misconceptions dealing with bisexuality and alcoholism. The way she weaves them into the story shows the lingering guilt one can feel due to mistakes made while under the influence and lack of understanding of bisexuality, enhances the romance between the hero and heroine. Both of these characters change and grow together and independently throughout the novel, and I couldn’t keep my smile off my face as these two learn to trust and love each other, flaws and all.
Sarina Bowen has crafted my favorite True North novel. I was captivated by this tale of people weighed down by the worries and preconceived notions of others. I reveled in their love and their acceptance of one another, a true example of what love can do.

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…
Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.
Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.
I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.
It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.
