My musings…

3.5 SECOND CHANCE CROWNS

I love R.S. Grey. There is always plenty of angst and complex characters, and her romantic comedies are always entering. The Beau & the Belle, however fell flat for me.

For Beau, I have tepid feelings towards him. I cannot say there is anything that I love about him, but there isn’t anything that I hated about his character either. What he does have is the patience of a saint for dealing with the insecurities of Lauren.

Lauren isn’t like any other R.S. Grey character I can remember. She is quirky and not your standard confident heroine, which makes her relatable to an extent, but her behavior could, at times, become a bit much. It had been 10 years since they had seen each other, and I wanted some of her insecurities to have gone away since she is a successful business woman.

The main reason this story didn’t work for me is because I felt like the synopsis was for a different story. I expected a strong confident heroine who would show the hero everything he is missing. I expected a lot of sexual tension and seduction, and this is in short supply. Plus, the conflict is lacking. There isn’t really one at all. The story really just chronicles the journey back to one another.

Even though the characters and story didn’t really work for me, it is still a well written story. R.S. Grey delivers laughter and fun with this light romantic comedy, and she is certainly an author I will continue to one-click.

About THE BEAU & THE BELLE:

Beau Fortier starred in most of my cringe-worthy teenage fantasies.

I met him when I was a junior in high school, a time that revolved exclusively around bad hair, failed forays into flirting, and scientific inquiries into which brand of toilet paper worked best for stuffing bras.

That is, until Beau moved into the small guest house just beyond my bedroom window.

A 24-year-old law student at Tulane, Beau was as mysterious to me as second base (both in baseball and in the bedroom). He was older. Intimidating. Hot. Boys my age had chicken legs and chubby cheeks. Beau had calloused hands and a jaw cut from steel. Our interactions were scarce—mostly involving slight stalking on my end—and yet deep down, I desperately hoped he saw me as more of a potential lover than a lovesick loser.

Turns out, I was fooling myself. My fragile ego learned that lesson the hard way.

Now, ten years later, we’re both back in New Orleans, and guess who suddenly can’t take his eyes off little ol’ me.

My old friend, Mr. Fortier.

But things have changed. I’m older now—poised and confident. My ego wears a bulletproof vest. The butterflies that once filled my stomach have all perished.

When I was a teenager, Beau warned me to guard my heart.

Let’s hope he knows how to guard his.
