4.5 I’ll Never Leave CROWNS
Uncharted by Julie Johnson is not just a romance. It is a story of survival, a story of finding a strength inside that a person didn’t know he or she had, and like Beck says, it is about holding onto hope in the bleakest of moments.
Beck is the perfect grumpy hero. From the moment we meet him, he is brash and abrasive with an arrogant mask, and I love it. Behind the truculent personality, though, is an honest man. When he speaks, people listen, and they know that what he is saying is the truth. He becomes the voice of reflection, the protector, and a man who becomes open to love.
Violet is a young woman looking to escape a mediocre life when she gets way more than she ever planned for. She grows up immensely during her time on the island, and she certainly seems much older than her actual age. Her hope and persistence is what keeps them alive and she gives them all a slice of happiness in a horrific situation.
There is little in the way of romance in this book. There is sexual tension between the H/h. There are conversations about how they feel and the obstacles that face them, but the evolution of the characters and the fight for survival takes center stage. This is more than a romance. It is about finding light in the darkest of places, and clinging onto hope when all seems lost.
So why the 4.5 Crowns? The story ends, and I was left unsatisfied with the resolution. This is not a cliffhanger, and it doest end at an appropriate spot but the uncertainty of the future of the couple left me reeling. I have no idea if we are getting more Beck and Violet, but I hope so. I want to see what happens to them, how they adjust, and if they are strong enough to survive this new uncharted waters.

“When we crash-landed on the island, I thought my story was over. Turns out, it was about to begin.”
He was an asshole from the first moment we met.
I took one look at the stranger in the airport terminal and knew he was exactly the kind of man my mother spent seventeen years warning me against. Gruff, grumpy, and far too good-looking to stare at without experiencing heart palpitations.
Thankfully, I’d never see him again.
Or so I thought.
I couldn’t have known our plane would crash.
I couldn’t have predicted we’d be the only survivors.
I couldn’t have ever, in my wildest dreams, anticipated that the asshole from the airport would become my only source of solace in the darkness.
It’s so wrong to want him, for so many reasons. But as the months slip by and our hopes of rescue grow dimmer… the spark between us kindles into something impossible to ignore.
Sometimes, survival requires swimming in uncharted waters. But if salvation doesn’t come soon…
I might just drown in him.
** UNCHARTED is a full-length standalone story of survival and forbidden love. Due to action elements, adult language, and sexual content, it is recommended for readers ages 16 and up. **
