#SoontoDrop “A Measure of Love” by Sophie Jackson

My musings…

Measure of Love is an well-written second chance romance. The story follows Lexi and Riley as they try to overcome their past to reconnect, and the story moves between the past and present in order to explain the relationship between the hero and heroine.

True to the series, Riley spends time in jail for something stupid he did in his youth. As a result, it alters his relationship with his family, particularly his father, and, unbeknownst to him, denies him of future happiness. Lexi is the heroine that is also affected by a tragic event in her past that ultimately changes the relationship between her and Riley. Both of these characters commit actions for which they must atone for, and their story follows their road to redemption.

Overall, I enjoyed bother characters, but tended to side with Riley. As a reader, I can understand Lexi’s choices, but I truly felt her fear causes her to make the decision she did, not out of protection. It also bothers me that she recognizes she made the the wrong choice but stands by her decision. This baffled me. How can she acknowledge she made the wrong decision and then stand by it? Riley was a fantastic character! He was repentant, kind, loving, and loyal. His dedication to his family and the people he loves is the kind you want in your brother, son, friend, or significant other. Finally, let’s talk about Noah. I don’t want to say too much, so I will just say that I loved him. How could you not?

Being the third book in the series, the reader also gets to catch up with the couples from the first two books, and I do love when an author lets the reader see how previous couples are holding up.

The writing is well done, and the story is paced appropriately. I like that the author didn’t throw extra obstacles/conflicts at them. Their hurdles are large enough without adding extra issues to their plate. It allows the reader to focus on the relationship between the two. Overall, it was an enjoyable read about two people learning to love and trust again.

***on a side note, I love Riley’s brothers. There is enough about them that I want to know more! Why is Seb sad? Why is Dex so reserved sexually (this is mentioned several times, and it makes me want to know why)? Does Tate get his HEA? Interested reader wants to know!

Synopsis:

From award-winning fanfic phenomenon Sophie Jackson, the third novel in the sexy and emotionally intense blockbuster A Pound of Flesh series.

Life in New York for ex-con Riley Moore is pretty damn good, until a call from his mother shatters the calm: his father has suffered his second heart attack in two years and is in a critical condition. Leaving everything behind, Riley flies home to Michigan for the first time in five years to support his mother and do his best to make amends with his father. He also tries not to think about Lexie Pierce, the only girl he ever truly cared about, and who broke his heart.

When they inevitably meet, memories of their love make Riley yearn to reconnect, despite the pain they both suffered. Though she’s wary, and has a secret she’s hidden from him for five years, Lexie has little willpower when it comes to Riley and she agrees. Besides, after all that has gone before, she owes it to both of them to find out if they can love each other again.

Can they both overcome their sorrow and secrets and finally share their life together?

A powerful new voice in modern romance, Sophie Jackson has crafted a passionate love story with unforgettable characters that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
