#BlogTour “Behind Closed Doors” by J.L. Berg

behindcloseddoorsreview My musings…

4 CROWNS

J.L. Berg delivers a story that is filled with complex characters looking to find their place in the world, only to find it in the arms of each other.

Roman is a man on a mission to prove that he is capable of running his father’s company.  This man has been shaped immensely by the events of his childhood and interactions with his father, which explains the gruff and closed off nature when the reader first meets him.  His background, however, allows the reader to feel sympathetic towards him, even when he is being a complete a**hole.  J.L. Berg does a fantastic job with creating allegiance to him as the hero, and, as a result the reader can overlook some of the more questionable activities he incites during the book.

Cara is a very honorable character and holds firm to her values and beliefs.  Even in the bustling city of NYC, she doesn’t let go of who she is, and, although she isn’t brash and loud, she has a quiet fortitude that allows her to exude strength of character without effort.   I simply adore her character and love the side she brings out in Roman.

On a side note, I absolutely love Cara’s mother!  The tiny scene she is in is one of my favorites, and she gave the absolute best mom advice.

This story is a slow burn, and it takes a considerable amount of time for the two characters to get together.  J.L. Berg, however, takes this time to develop the emotional aspect of their relationship.  The reader gets to see walls get broken down, and the characters begin to change and evolve as a result of their interactions, which allows for the sex to be much more emotionally charged.   The conflict and resolution felt rushed for me, and I would have liked a little more development and fall out from the plot twist; however, that epilogue will have the reader feeling all sorts of warm, gooey feelings by the end of the book.

This book has all the wonderful attributes of an slow-burn romance, and J.L. Berg executes the delivery of this story well.  So if you are looking for a gruff and emotionally flawed hero who finds solace in the arms of his heroine, then this book is definitely one to be added to your TBR.

SBCD Amazonynopsis:

My name is Roman Cavenaugh and I’m kind of an asshole.

Running a company isn’t easy, especially when everyone expects you to fail, so being a jerk? It comes with the territory.

I don’t have time to mess around, and I sure as hell didn’t see her coming.

Cara Hamilton—she was supposed to be off limits…a temporary employee brought in during my assistant’s maternity leave.

But, in the blink of an eye, she became so much more.
An obsession I couldn’t shake.

So yeah, I may be an asshole, but now, I finally had a purpose, and soon, she would be mine.
All’s fair in love and war…
