Commander in Chief by Katy Evans
Series: White House #2
Publication Date: January 5th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance
After, the heart-beaking conclusion of Mr. President, Katy Evans heals the hearts of readers and continues to wow them with the story of President Matt Hamilton and Charlotte. Their love is sweet, pure, and completely sexy, but more than that Katy Evans has created a couple who I wish could actually run America.
Matt Hamilton, in Mr. President, won my heart, and he continues to own it in Commander in Chief. President Hamilton is everything readers want in a president and a book boyfriend: honorable, loyal, passionate, and dedicated, and he applies all of these attributes in his personal and professional life. Seeing his dedication to Charlotte and the life he wants to live with her, as well as his devotion to bettering the United States of America will have readers’ hearts swooning. I know mine did! Every line from his mouth, every act of love, and every slow kiss melts my heart. He is utterly perfect in every single way!
While I like Charlotte overall as character, I struggle at times with her inner dialogue. I admire her desire to be an amazing FLOTUS, and I understand her fear and apprehension with taking on such a role. The pressure to make the country a better place, the media attention, the speculation on your relationship with the President, and feeling the immense weight of all the First Ladies who came before would be heavy. I find this makes her relatable, and watching her eventually fill this role with grace and heart makes me like her as a heroine. What I did struggle with, though, is her repeated adoration of Matt. It seemed that she was still the star-struck little girl versus the grown woman who is love with a man, someone who is her equal. Her continued concern over what others think when Matt has zero concern because he wants her is also another area that at times is too much for me. She does, however, grow and develop throughout the book, and by the end I love the woman she became. I just wish she would have gotten there sooner. Her dedication to her husband, to her family, and the country highlights what I adore about her, and seeing her become the heroine I wanted by the end of the book is gratifying.
The chemistry between them is just as electric as it was in Mr. President. Who knew kisses could be so intoxicating and so HOT?! My lord! Having a man kiss you like that would have your knees buckling, and the seductive nature of each kiss is awe inspiring! Readers will dream of being kissed and adored in the way Matt kisses and adores Charlotte. More than their physical chemistry, their emotional chemistry is also off the charts. Their devotion to and mutual respect for each other only heightens the intensity of the relationship. Their solid foundation makes them an amazing couple, not only good for each other but also good for the country.
Is it wrong to wish that Matt and Charlotte could be the real POTUS and FLOTUS? Just as enchanting as the romance of Commander in Chief is hearing the idealistic vision of America through the mouth of President Hamilton and Charlotte. His desires to change healthcare, fix the economy, and just generally make America a better place is enchanting. Even Charlotte’s desire to make a difference, to leave America a better place for the current and future citizens is admirable, and one I wish would actually be the goal of current politicians. Even though I love this aspect of the book, I would have loved to see a little bit more of an obstacle in some way during this story. Yes, I desperately want Matt and Charlotte to have their happily ever after, but each and every conflict that presented itself is easily overcome. Maybe this speaks to the dedication and love of Matt and Charlotte, but a little conflict could have bolstered the overall impact of the story. Even with the quick resolutions to the problems they face, I still fell in love with Matt and Charlotte as a couple and as fictitious leaders of America, and the plot line over the course of two books is wonderful!
Katy Evans continues astound me with her words. Her heroes are always charismatic, charming, and utterly sexy, her heroines are among my favorites with their vulnerability and open-nature, and her words provide me with pure entertainment, a perfect escape from the world. The White House series is just another well-written and beautiful romance to add my ever-growing collection of Kay Evan’s books, and I am so looking forward to where she is going to take this series next!

He’s won the hearts of millions. But is he willing to lose his?
I met the president’s son when we were both young. Matthew Hamilton was handsome, polished, and intelligent. I’d never met a guy like him.
He promised me that he’d never run for president. I promised that if he did, I’d be by his side.
Three terms later, an invitation to join Matthew Hamilton’s campaign is the most exhilarating opportunity I’ve ever experienced. I’m determined to make a difference; he is determined to win.
Focused on his goal, Matt is steadfast, ruthless, and disarming. All eyes are on him and his popularity is surging. But soon, the next possible president of the United States is possessing me in more ways than one—and despite the risks, I’m helpless to resist.
We’re stealing touches, stealing moments, and stealing away at night. But our chemical connection is quickly becoming dangerously combustive, putting not only my heart, but Matt’s chance at the presidency on the line.
Winning will take everything. Walking away will be the hardest thing of all.
