5 MAKE OUR OWN RULES CROWNS
I am in complete awe of another modern fairytale from Katy Regnery. Her unique take on each tale, The Little Mermaid, in particular astounds me. She takes these little pieces of the story and transform them into something new while still holding on to the themes and integrity of the original story, and Don’t Speak is among my favorites in the series.
The story centers are Laire, daughter of local fisherman, and Erik, the governor’s son. There immediate attraction to each other sets them on a path to finding love, but their worlds are destined to keep them apart. Laire comes from a very closed off and disconnected from the outside world community. They fear and dislike dingbatters, people not local to their community, they are strict and seemingly crazy regulations about dating and fooling around with others. These restrictions and her fear of breaking them are a constant weight on their relationship, but they endure for love. Erik comes from an elite and wealthy family. His adoration and acceptance of Laire as she is shows that magic of love, that when it is real, it is worth any sacrifice, any restrictions, and any pain. Even though he fits her in every way, Erik’s position in life only serves as another obstacle for the two.
What readers will really enjoy about this story is Laire is strong. When her world falls apart, when she is forced to make hard decisions for herself and her future, her strength appears. Once she makes the decision she moves forward, leaving behind her old life of condemnation, and instead chooses a life of opportunity. She becomes brace and chases her dreams, and I absolutely love her character for this.
This story is beautifully written. It is told in two parts, the before and after. The before exhibits everything readers remember about a young summer love. I felt myself recalling those emotions, the stolen moments, the nights you wished would never end, the promises for more as summer ended. Every single moment is priceless and readers want to treasure each experience with them. Katy Regnery’s stylistic choice to the bridge the time gap with the use of a journal was also brilliant. Readers are able to see the years pass, see the changes that have occurred, and see the emotional state of the characters. When the second half of the book begins, reconciliation is imminent, and while it happens quickly, it makes sense for these two as there has never been anyone else.
The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite stories, and Katy Regnery really did it justice with Don’t Speak. It accurately conveys the longing for more, for a different life and the power of love when it needs to cross the lines of class. It is a tale interwoven with sadness, joy, hope, and fear, perfectly encapsulating everything that is young love and summer romance.

From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.
In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman’s daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party where she is working.
Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.
Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

She heard his voice before she saw him.
Had she known the ultimate cost of that simple glance heavenward, maybe she wouldn’t have stopped. Maybe she would have just kept on walking with her head down. But fate held no warnings for Laire Maiden Cornish.
Shielding her eyes, she looked up at a deck wrapped around the second floor of the mansion, waiting a moment for her eyes to adjust as he came into view.
There, in the glittering sunlight . . . a boy.
No, a man.
A young man, a little older than she, tall and muscular, with jet-black hair and a square jaw, dark brown eyes, and a deep tan. He wore a robin’s-egg blue bathing suit with Kelly green palm fronds in a small repeat and a pair of sunglasses buried in his thick hair. In one hand, he held a phone up to his ear, and in the other, he slowly swirled a glass filled with ice and clear liquid. He stared out at the sound, concentrating on his call.
“Hey!” he yelled. “Can you hear me now?” He huffed with annoyance, pulling the phone away from his ear and squinting at it before trying again. “Pete? It’s Erik. Can you hear me?” He set the glass down on the balcony’s wooden railing and gave his phone his full attention. Staring down at it, he muttered, “Shit. No reception.”
His name is Erik.
Feeling a sharp burn in her lungs, Laire realized she’d been holding her breath and sucked in a huge gulp of air as she stared up at him, frozen in the moment, utterly mesmerized.
She had never seen a more perfect, more handsome person in her entire life.
The sun glinted off his dark hair and wrapped his body in gold, making him appear godlike so very far above her. Were she the type to swoon, Laire imagined she would have been a puddle of goopy longing on the ground below him, content to sacrifice her pride for a glimpse at his beauty.
