5 LOVE TO HATE YOU CROWNS
While reading El Diablo, I feel like M. Robinson cracked open my chest and beat up my heart a little bit. The sad part is that I enjoyed every minute of this splendid torture.
The characterization of Alejandro is some of the best I have ever read. The complexity and layers of this man’s character are never ending. The reader meets Alejandro when he is kid, and we get to see his innocence and everything that is good in him and his life. Then we see it get ripped away from him, and his slow decent into becoming the man we love to hate, El Diablo. Seeing this progression accomplishes several things:
- The reader gets to fall in love with his character before the fall, and, honestly, this is what makes me forgive him, just like Lexi, for all the gross atrocities he commits not only in his life but against her as well.
- Although he does horrific acts throughout the novel, his motivation for the crimes he commits makes sense for who he is and life he has had to live. Once again, pushing the reader to understand and possibly forgive him.
- It allows her to bring his characterization back full circle. The ending is just everything, exactly what the reader needs for him after this emotional rollercoaster, and she returns him to the man we can truly love.
Lexi is also wonderful in so many ways. She is brash and confident, and she does what she has to do to survive in life. The isolation and abuse she endured would break the average person, but she still finds a way to shine and to chase after the dreams and passions. I think I love her most, though, when she is standing up to Martinez and making him face the truth or calling him on his lies. Her unending devotion to their relationship and her desire to push through and fight for them makes her one of the strongest heroines I have met.
Through it all though, I always rooted for them. No matter how hard their relationship got or the awful things they did to each other, I wanted them together, because their relationship is about more than the physical. The reader can literally witness the transformation in each of them as their relationship progresses.
This plot will grip you from its onset. M. Robinson opens the story with the climax of the plot, and she leaves you in suspense, wondering what is going on. She quickly takes the reader back to the exposition, where she introduces the reader to the young Alejandro, and where she beings to set up the story that will gut you. And, it will gut you. Readers will feel like their heart is being ripped out and they will cry for the crimes everyone endures, but know that M. Robinson will ultimately give these characters what they deserve for all of the hardships she puts them through. You will be completely and utterly satisfied with the epilogue of this book.
El Diablo delivers in all areas of dark romance. M. Robinson has created a complex plot that contains rich, well-developed characters, enthralling the reader from page one. It is truly a beautiful story, not only of a violent broken man but also a story of redemption and what real love can fix if we are open to it.

I was ruthless.
I was feared.
I had sacrificed. Myself. Her. Everything…
Living in a world where I was worth more dead than alive was
a choice. I was a bad man, never claimed to be anything else. I’ve done things
I’m not proud of. Seen things that can’t be unseen. I’ve caused pain that I
can’t undo.
It was all my choice.
Every decision.
Every order.
Right and wrong never mattered.
Until her.
She was under my protection, until she became my obsession.
But who was going to save her…
From. Me. The devil himself.
Fate brought us together. Destiny destroyed us.

“I’m fine,” she stubbornly replied. Shaking her legs and arms out. Getting back into position, looking at me through the mirror.
I cocked my head to the side, arching an eyebrow. She narrowed her eyes at me, but begrudgingly listened. I pressed play, allowing the melody to once again take over. She placed her leg on the lowest barre, making her ass stick out in my direction.
Tempting me.
She closed her eyes, needing to get lost in the music, wanting to push away all the negative thoughts, already feeling discouraged. I stood, taking off my suit jacket. Rolling up the sleeves of my collared shirt as I stepped onto the hardwood floor. I slowly came up behind her, catching her off guard.
She froze, turning around, opening her eyes. Peering up at me through her lashes. “What are you doing?”
I leaned forward against her ear, grinning. “I’m helping you stretch.” Getting down on my knees in front of her.
Her eyes dilated. The feeling of disappointment replaced with nothing but lust. She placed her arms out to the side, resting up against the barre, supporting her weight. I grabbed her ankle, lifting it up in the air, rubbing along her leg as it was fully stretched, before setting it on the lowest barre. Running my other hand up her side, easing her over toward the extended leg. She understood what I was doing, reaching for her ankle, stretching. Standing back up, bringing her arms above her head, I caressed along her leg again, casually turning her torso so her leg was still placed on the barre behind her.
Her breathing hitched as I touched her all over her lower body. My lips softly kissing the inside of her thigh to where she wanted my mouth the most.
