Musings…
4 Angsty CROWNS
El Pecador is exactly what I was expecting and also nothing that I was expecting. The character, the surprise plot twist that is a signature of M. Robinson, and the dirty, steamy moments between the hero and heroine are all there.  Yet, I found myself not connecting with them or the story.
Damien is the man we knew when El Santo ended.  He is weighed down by his perception or himself, and the demons he carries from his past crimes.  Although he is confident, he feels insecure when it comes to his worth in relation to Amira. A good quarter of the novel, in fact, focuses on his rise to power, his guilt over abandoning her, and his attempt to find her, as well as his reaction when he thinks he has lost her.  When they reconnect, though, the old Damien comes back, and I found that he has not really evolved as a character from the end of the last book.
Amira is a whole new heroine. The innocent and immature girl we left at the end of El Santo is gone and in her place is a sultry, lethal woman.  She is an equal to Damien and has no qualms challenging this man. Amira has many secrets that she has kept over the years when Damien abandoned her, but as the story progresses and the characterization is revealed, readers get to see how she has become this new woman.
The story is a slow start.  These two characters aren’t together for most of the beginning of the book, and while it is needed to understand what has happened during their time apart, it felt too long.  The wait for them to come together or to even get any information was too much for me, and I found myself drifting.  Once these two come back together, the sparks ignite and the M. Robinson plot that I love is in full force. The intimacy laced with the anger is explosive, and there are many secrets that are revealed, and I didn’t always see them coming, which is what makes me a huge fan of her stories.
Overall, El Pecador is a good story. It is entertaing and sexy, but it lacked something for me. It didn’t connect with me or enthrall me like all her past novels that I have read, and I can’t really pin it down to one thing. I am just going to go with the “it’s me, not the book” this time around.

EXCERPT
She
couldn’t take it anymore and started pushing me to get free from my grasp.
“Stop! I hate you, Damien! Do you hear me? I fucking hate you!” she yelled over
and over again, aching to make herself and me believe it.
My heart
broke.
My fingers
twitched.
And tears
threatened to surface.
However, I
wouldn’t let up and just kept caressing her, kissing her, whispering that I
loved her. Battling her hateful words with my loving ones. I could feel she was
reaching her breaking point, as much as she could. Her wrist suddenly slipped
through my grip and she shoved me with so much force that she was able to slap
me across the face. Going full speed to do it again, but I intervened by
grabbing her forearm, pinning her to the blanket. Locking down her petite frame
with my flawed heart and beaten body.
She laid
there beneath me, panting profusely, emotionally and physically consumed with
tears cascading down the sides of her face. For a moment, I allowed her to take
my breath away. In my eyes, she’d never looked so fucking beautiful.
So goddamn
breathtaking.
So fucking
mine…
I leaned
forward and kissed away all her tears, tasting her nightmares, her memories,
her love and hatred for me. Tenderly kissing my way to her lips while her body
continued to shudder from my intense, overpowering love. Overwhelming her
emotions and overriding her thoughts the way only I could ever do. Before
another second slipped by, I kissed her for all the years I didn’t, for all the
times I couldn’t, for all the moments I so desperately wanted to. Losing myself
in her. Almost like I was trying to kiss the agony and pain I caused right out
of her. Wanting to hold her tormented burdens, inflicted solely by my mistakes
and regrets.
