5 EIGHTEEN CROWNS
You know how there are just certain authors that have that thing, that almost magical element to their writing that brings it to life, allows their words to embed themselves into the reader’s soul, leaving the him or her emotionally worn out by the end of the book. For me, this is Ginger Scott, and Hold My Breath is another beautiful tale of a broken boy and girl finding redemption in each other and in love.
Ginger Scott’s heroes also find a way into my heart and not because they are alpha dominants or cocky manwhores, but because her heroes are the good guys, really the best guys, down in their souls. Will is the epitome of everything I have come to love from her heroes. He is walking with the weight of the world on his shoulders after a tragedy most wouldn’t have survived from. Attempting to reclaim his role in the swimming world, he struggles with survivors guilt, his feelings for Maddy, and the several other responsibilities that weigh him down. What really makes the reader feel sympathy for his character is the fact that he carries all of these problems and responsibilities for others when he isn’t required to to do so. He harbors secrets, takes care of others, and tries to protect the ones he loves, which makes him endearing. But the true joy of watching his character is witnessing his development and transformation as his relationship with Maddy was restored as the book progressed. Maddy, the heroine of our story, earns the hearts of readers because she is a champion of our beloved hero, yet she also begins the novel damaged. Through the interactions of the couple, she begins to come to terms with her past and her feelings and learns to embrace the present. One of the aspects that I loved most about her is her level-headed reactions to surprises. These two together are truly just a joy to watch and to see evolve and change, and I completely fell in love with them as people and as a couple.
The plot of this story will put readers’ hearts through the ringer. It is emotional and raw, and it will cut right into your heart, but really these make the best stories. The journey of self-healing, of believing you are worth a good life, of learning that you need to let go of the things weighing you down are just some of the many topics approached by Ginger Scott. This is an absolutely beautiful story, and with each word, I only fell more in love with the characters and anticipated their arrival at their happily ever after.
I am in awe of Ginger Scott’s talents. Her words exude emotion, resulting in the reader living vicariously through these characters, learning right along with them. The stories, while not suspenseful and action packed, still leave me sitting on the edge of my seat. But what makes me a huge fan of her books is that she always has this secondary layer of commentary about society or an individual. These reflections about life that she layers in with her romance makes her books so much more than the average romance.
Hold My Breath is just another example of the excellence that is Ginger Scott. This tale of healing and love will make your heart hurt, yet heal you at the same time. It is beautiful and should be sitting on the shelves of every lover of romance.

Fractions of seconds can do lots of damage. One decision can ruin lives. A blink can be tragic. And loving a Hollister…can hurt like hell.
I would know.
They say the average person can hold their breath under water for two full minutes when pushed to the extremes. Will Hollister has been holding his for years. The oldest of two elite swimming brothers, Will was always a dominant force in the water. But in life, he preferred to let his younger brother Evan be the one to shine.
Evan got the girl, and Will…he got to bury all of the secrets. A brother’s burden, the weight of it all nearly left him to drown.
The daughter of two Olympians, my path was set the day my fingertips first touched water. My future was as crystal clear as the lane I dominated in the pool—swim hard, win big, love a Hollister.
My life with Evan burned bright. He gave me arms to come home to, and a smile that fooled the world into believing everything was perfect. But it was Will who pushed me. Will…who really knew me.
And when all of the pieces fell, it was Will who started to pick them up.
In the end, the only thing that matters are those few precious seconds—and what we decide to do while we still have them in our grasp.

“I need you to stay, Will,” she says. “No matter what…if you lose, if I lose. If this gets hard, whatever this is. I need you to stay until we figure it out. And even then, I just think…”
She lifts her head, and I cup her face in my hands, her eyes locking on mine.
“I think I just need you to stay,” she says.
I stare at her for several seconds, holding my breath, my mind racing with all of my demons, with everyone else’s demons, too. I fear none of it is possible. I’m going to break her heart. Those demons—they’ll destroy her.
But I can’t give her up. I need her to stay, too. Even though I can’t promise it; even though I shouldn’t, I say exactly what she needs to hear.
I let myself believe it for the breath it takes to speak.
“Okay,” I say, bringing her lips to mine, kissing her softly then closing my eyes as her forehead rests against mine. “Okay,” I whisper again.
I may have to break this promise, but for right now…for right now, I mean it.
