5 MILLION “Play You at the Five” CROWNS

MORE. Always more. This is my fourth novel by Kennedy Ryan, and at the end of every single one my heart screams out MORE!! Her vivid imagery and beautiful prose create a completely immersive experience, one that few authors accomplish, and I feel as though I live and travel this journey with each character in the story. I feel the darkness and fear and taste the pain, but I also get to revel in the love and triumph that is bound to come. With her words, readers truly get to experience another life, the beautiful and the ugly, and they come out changed by it all.

Kennedy Ryan seems to have a gift at creating these heroes who are noble and good at heart. They understand and cherish the women they are with. They listen. They support them. They provide in a manner that gives their women independence and freedom. We saw it with Grip, and it is even more evident with August. He loves with his soul and is the perfect balance of alpha dominance and gentle lover. He gives Iris what she needs to thrive and to heal, and his emotions for her are so vibrant that they flowed off of the screen and wrapped around my own heart, squeezing it tightly, making me fall for him and wish that we had more August Wests in the world.

Like her heroes, Ryan creates heroines who are strong, even if it is hidden below the surface or imprisoned for a bit, and there is no doubt that Iris is a force. Even in her darkest moments, when she suffered the most inhumane and depraved atrocities that had me grabbing chest and holding my hand to my mouth in horror, she had an unfathomable power to protect her daughter and to save herself the only way she could. Her journey is hard and long, filled with the darkest moments imaginable, but her perseverance and her ownership of her body and her life creates that light and hope and the end of the tunnel. She is woman who is so much more than her mistakes. She is strong. She is beautiful. She is worthy of love. Nothing is more fulfilling than watching her get it.

What will always make me a fan of Kennedy Ryan is what her stories do. Once again, she shows that the world is various shades of grey. I’m sure we’ve all been the person that says, “she should have left.” We question why she stayed. We don’t understand who would put themselves in that situation time and time again, but with Iris’s story, we find that it isn’t that simple. A woman can’t always just walk away. Iris and August’s story forces us, again, not to just examine our own perceptions of abuse but also the legal system that is meant to bring justice to those who have been harmed. She doesn’t stand on soap box and demand change, but she presents ideas to be discussed in hopes of making change. As a result, Long Shot becomes a beacon of hope, a light in the darkness, for someone who is fighting like Iris. It lets them know there is real, good love in the world with men like August. It calls for change, and it exemplifies that romance has voice that demands to be heard.

Kennedy Ryan will always be a one-click author by her name alone. Her stories make you feel every single emotion. Her words are unbelievably beautiful. Her stories elicit discussion of issues many try to ignore or downplay. She forces you to get uncomfortable and to examine the status quo. She also, though, gives you the passion and the romance of epic loves. You envy the love of the characters. You want it for yourself. You want it for your kids. You want that kind of love for the world. Her voice becomes the voice of those who can’t speak for those who yearn for real love, and she is true literary talent.

Think you know what it’s like being a baller’s girl?

You don’t.

My fairy tale is upside down.

A happily never after.

I kissed the prince and he turned into a fraud.

I was a fool, and his love – fool’s gold.

Now there’s a new player in the game, August West.

One of the NBA’s brightest stars.

Fine. Forbidden.

He wants me. I want him.

But my past, my fraudulent prince, won’t let me go.

“Iris?” August’s frown, the concern on his face, in his voice, remind me where I am. “Baby, you okay?”

I blink down at him dumbly, swallowing my tears, eating my memories whole and digesting a nightmare from long ago. I nod, my lips a cold, wobbly curve.

“Kiss me,” he whispers, his eyes so tender, so intent.

I remember a magical night under the stars, under a streetlight on the eve of greatness. A night filled with laughter and confidences, pregnant with promise. And I see him so clearly, my prince, asking for a kiss.

And I do.

I kiss him like the world might end tonight because I’ll never take this for granted. Not his kindness, when I’ve known cruelty all too well. Not his tenderness, when I’ve been handled roughly in the past. Not his love, when I’ve been possessed and owned and mistreated.

He thaws me with his kiss, my prince, and I melt into him. We’re chest to chest, with August’s number crushed between us. I take his cock in my hand, aligning our bodies, and two become one in a carnal slide of flesh. I anchor myself by my elbows hooked around his neck, and we kiss until I’m dizzy and our breaths tangle in a cloud of bliss. Under the jersey, his palm spans my back, digging into the naked flesh as our hips lock and roll and grind. My body clenches around him, and we pray, we curse, we moan, we mate like our bodies were made for this moment.

Ours is a love that reimagines—that peels back the sky at high noon searching for the stars, collecting them like shells in a bucket. We bathe in stardust, drink from the Milky Way, and dance on the moon. We pierce the firmament, peer into infinity, and tread on time and space. There is no before. There is no after. Now gives birth to forever. This moment may die, but this love never will. Time is not a line. It’s a circle, and we, August and Iris, we stand at the center.

Don’t hold your breath, this story will steal it from you.”
