 My musings…

4 Second Chance CROWNS

Penelope Ward’s second chance romance follows the story of Frankie and Mack, as he pursues the only woman he has ever loved in order to reclaim his own happiness and fulfillment in life.

Mackenzie is a single dad who is trying to do the best he can, and part of doing the best for his son is to make himself happy.  Thus begins his pursuit of the one who got away, Frankie.  His pursuit of her is tireless, and he refuses to let obstacles get in his way of claiming her.  This is one of the attributes that I love about him.  He pursues without regret while also being respectful of not only Frankie but of her current relationship.  He openly tells her his plans to win her back, but also puts the control in her hands, and this makes him an endearing hero.

Frankie is a different beast for me.  I struggle with her character, and I vacillate back and forth between liking her and not liking her.  I love that she is a completely unique character, timid but has an inner strength that just exudes from her personality, drawing in people, like Mack.  I enjoy watching her with her students, particularly Mack’s son. She is understanding while also strict in regards to accommodations she allows him, and while most won’t consider this aspect of her personality, as a teacher, I really connected to this aspect of her character.  What I did struggle with is her participation in Mack’s pursuit of her.  She is not free emotionally to reconnect with him, and while there are times that I thought she crosses the line, hence the back and forth for me.  What I do love and respect about her character is her honesty, which helps to alleviate my initial disdain of the character.  As the story progresses, Frankie’s decisions earn my allegiance, and by the end of the book I found I enjoyed her character as a whole.

The plot of the story is paced well, and it goes back and forth between the past and the present.  My favorite moments of the story are the past, as this is where Frankie and Mack really shine.  This is where readers will feel their connection and their chemistry.  Showing the past allows the readers to get a glimpse of this couple before bad decisions and their consequences have weighed this couple down.  It shows readers and unadulterated view of their love before adult responsibilities interfered with their relationship, and this is the part of the story I fell in love with.  I also enjoy the conflict and resolution of the story, which are often sticking points in books for me.  It allows for a legitimate conflict, authentic reactions from the characters, aligning with their character development, and the resolution of the story is believable, giving the readers the HEA they are looking for.

Penelope Ward’s Mack Daddy gives the reader what they love in a romance, a chance for a couple who has been torn apart by outside forces finding a way to come back to each other, and the idea of soulmates, of being a perfect fit for someone, that romance lovers long for, and Penelope Ward delivers in regards to showcasing a love that can’t be conquered by years or time apart, giving the reader complete satisfaction with the journey of these characters and their final destination.

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a sexy, STANDALONE second-chance romance.

They called him Mack Daddy. No, seriously, his name was Mack. Short for Mackenzie. Thus, the nickname. Perfect, right?

So was he: perfect. The perfect physical male specimen.

At the private school where I taught, Mack Morrison was the only man around in a sea of women.

Everyone wanted a piece of the hot single father of the sweet little boy.

I was riddled with jealousy, because they didn’t know that—to me—he was much more.

They didn’t know about our past.

He’d chosen my school for his son on purpose, because Mack and I, we had unfinished business.

As my friend Lorelai so eloquently put it: “Unfinished business between two people who are clearly attracted to each other is like an eternal case of blue balls.” And I was suffering in pain from my case.

I was still intensely attracted to Mack. I tried to resist him, immersing myself further into a relationship with another man just to protect my heart.

Not to mention, getting involved with a parent was strictly against school rules. But seeing Mack day in and day out was breaking me down.

And soon I might be breaking all the rules.

Author’s note – Told in alternating points of view, Mack Daddy is a full-length standalone novel.
