-Fair Warning – This my first book hangover of 2018! I don’t want to let go! I don’t want to move on! I’m ruined!-
5+ 3-2-1 CROWNS
When you pick up an LJ Shen book there are some stylistic components that we as readers expect. We are guaranteed to have a hero who is a complete jerk, a heroine who emotionally suffers at his hand but has the temerity to face him, and so much angst that we are left reeling. We get all of this with Midnight Blue, but this one, this journey is so much more.
Alex starts out as the standard LJ Shen hero, but with each chapter that is told, we see his layers peeled back. We get to see that he truly is the broken and jaded prince of the music world. He is driven by anger and pain, seeking retribution for all those who he perceives to have harmed him. On top of this, he is an addict and fights to stay clean throughout the story. His relationship with Indie even begins as a way to seek revenge. What makes readers like him is his honesty, even when it makes you want to slap him. He doesn’t ever sugar coat what he wants or his end goal, which is what makes some of his conversations with Indie so heart crushing! Just like the heroine, we see what is below the surface of this abrasive man, and we want to see this broken prince become the man he is meant to be.
Indie is my favorite LJ Shen heroine (ok, maybe tied with Rosie). With this character, Shen achieved that delicate balance of a feminine and authentically unique woman who also has a backbone. She doesn’t run from Alex’s belligerent attitude, and she doesn’t kowtow to his demands. She fights him and her heart. It is through her, though, that we get to see the real Alex, and their time together changes her as much as him. She becomes stronger and more assertive through her interactions with him, but she still maintains the huge heart that makes her who she is.
This story from the very beginning will rip your heart out. Alex chasing her, the gut-wrenching honest conversations, and the sexual tension are enough to keep anyone glued to this story, but LJ Shen throws in some curveballs I never expected. These revelations not only blew my mind but they also serve to give readers a real conflict that is out of the norm for the plot she develops in the exposition and rising action of the story. The falling action had me loving both Alex and Indie for the independence it showed for each of them, and the resolution, oh boy, the resolution had me grinning from ear to ear. Gah! I want to go back and read it all again!
Midnight Blue is more than character evolution and plot development, however. It is story that, much like your favorite song, seeps into your soul. Her words make you feel every single moment and endure every single emotion, and by the end of Midnight Blue, you feel changed, too. When it’s over, you don’t move on, as these characters and their journey stay with you. You sit a reflect on the themes they have shared with you, and you pour over every line you have highlighted marveling at the beauty of the story. It is a rare few who move readers in such a way, but LJ Shen has more than accomplished this with Midnight Blue.
LJ Shen has become a one-click author for me ever since I picked up Blood to Dust! Every journey is emotional, heartbreaking, sexy, and pure entertainment. What I love most, though, is that with each story, she brings something more than a romance. We get real applicable themes, and the idea of Midnight Blue, that broken people can heal and find happiness not in others but in themselves is one I love the most.

It should have been easy.
I needed the money. He needed a babysitter to keep him from snorting himself to death.
I was cherry-picked especially for him. Responsible. Optimistic. Warm. Innocent.
The worst part is that I should have known better.
Alex Winslow. British rock star. Serial heartbreaker. Casanova with whiskey eyes.
“Don’t get near the devil in a leather jacket. He’ll chew you up and spit you out.”
Sounds familiar? That’s because it was a headline in a tabloid the second time he got arrested.
Guess what? I didn’t listen.
I signed the contract.
World tour. Three months. Four Continents. One hundred shows.
My name is Indigo Bellamy, and I sold my soul to a tattooed god.
Problem was, my soul wasn’t enough for Alex Winslow. He ended up taking my body, too.
Then he took my heart.
Then he took my all.

Nat’s words came back and haunted me like a bad haircut from the eighties. An irrational need to check the goods took over me. It wasn’t like he minded. According to the rumors, his dick had seen more cameras than Kendall Jenner. Slowly—so painfully slowly—my eyes drifted down his sinewy body. I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Whatever I had in mind, though, didn’t come close to the real thing. Thick, long but not atrocious. With thin veins running through its length.
“Nice view?” he groaned, tucking his junk back into his briefs. His profile was glorious. Strong jaw, pouty lips, eyes like sex…
My eyes snapped up when I realized he was talking to me. “I wasn’t…”
“Looking? Yes, you were. Next time take a picture. It lasts longer.” He rolled his zipper upward and flushed the toilet with the toe of his boot. He turned around and squirted soap into his palm, washing his hands almost violently—rubbing between each finger and scratching his knuckles like he wanted to shed his own skin. When he was done, he looked around for a towel.
I cleared my throat, scrambling to regain my wits. “Longer than the glimpse or longer than your performance?”
Casually—so unbearably casually—he wiped his wet hands over my purple dress. I gasped, moving sideways. It looked like he was about to open the door and get out, but before I had the chance to yell at him for using me as a human towel, he slammed me against the wall, bracing both his arms above my head and pinning me to my spot. I let out a shriek of surprise at the sudden proximity.
Alex Winslow is touching me. Willingly, my surprisingly pitiful brain squealed.
Heat rolled off his body, making my back arch and my breath catch in my throat.
“Let’s make one thing clear—I could fuck you to a point of numbness without even breaking a sweat if I wanted to. Now, careful, New Girl. If you don’t keep your distance from me, I think I just might.”
About the Author:
L.J. Shen is an International #1 best-selling author of Contemporary Romance and New Adult novels. She lives in Northern California with her husband, young son and chubby cat.
Before she’d settled down, L.J. (who thinks referring to herself in the third person is really silly, by the way) traveled the world, and collected friends from all across the globe. Friends who’d be happy to report that she is a rubbish companion, always forgets peoples’ birthdays and never sends Christmas cards.
She enjoys the simple things in life, like spending time with her family and friends, reading, HBO, Netflix and internet-stalking Stephen James. She reads between three to five books a week and firmly believes Crocs shoes and mullets should be outlawed.
