5 WHAT THE ???? CROWNS
As I approached the end of this book, I sat stunned with my eyes wide, my hand covering my mouth, and my eyes flying across the page. The revelations and actions during the last couple of chapters blew my mind and took this from a 4 crown read to a 5 crown read. When the book was over, I sat staring at my Kindle screen trying to process what I read. My next thought was I need book 3 now!
This story of romance and vengeance and retribution is unlike anything that I have read from Sawyer Bennett, and, even though it is not her normal trope, I am in love with this story and series.
The first reason I am enamored with the series is Beck and Sela. The heroine is a unique character, but I think that I love her most for her growth. In Sugar Daddy, she is solely focused on revenge, which I completely do not blame her for wanting. In fact, I want it for her. There is some development in Sugar Daddy as her feelings for Beck grow, but she is still very much focused on revenge. But, her motivations change Sugar Rush, and, while she still wants revenge, she wants to get her life back and live it with Beck. Her relationship becomes more important than revenge. Don’t get me wrong, she still wants justice, but revenge is put on the back burner. I also love Sela for her strength and determination in this book. I love that she is willing to fight for the future she wants and even is willing to help another character who has been a victim of rape. In addition to Sela, I adore Beck!! I wasn’t quite sure how I would feel about him in this book with the ending of Sugar Daddy, but he completely redeems himself. He is supportive and wants retribution for the crimes that have been perpetrated against Sela. He works hard with Dennis, who I really enjoyed as a character, to find justice for Sela while trying to preserve the Sugar Daddy business. Beck is quickly moving into the favorite hero category for me. Some might feel that the relationship isn’t realistic because they connected quickly and have really only focused on the rape of Sela, but I feel that this makes sense. When something tragic happen, as intense as what occurred to Sela, I really believe that this can make the relationship progress quickly. It will be interesting to see how the relationship develops once vengeance is enacted, and I wonder if this will be the focus on Sugar Free, the fall out of the events at the end of Sugar Rush.
The plot of this book is amazing! I am going to be honest and state that I fully walked into this book thinking it would be a 4 crown read. Based on plot structure, Sugar Rush is mainly the rising action of the story and ends with the climax, but, holy heck, is this plot amazing. The planning and strategizing, the need for everything to go as planned, and the anxiety of whether or not Sela will get her justice kept me reading. And, as I stated at the beginning of the review, the last two chapters blew my mind. The climax of this story is unreal. It left me in shock, in the absolute best kind of way. Overall, the pacing is perfect and kept me intrigued the whole way
through to the end.
This book is utter perfection to me. I realize that the darker nature of Sela and the plot of Sugar Rush may not be for some people, but I personally like to read books that have dark elements mixed in with the romance, and Sawyer Bennett has done it exquisitely. I really cannot wait for the conclusion of this series with Sugar Free!
