5 Love Me Wild CROWNS
I enjoy all of Karina Halle’s stories, but these types of stories are where her talent shines. Laced with heartfelt emotion, this second chance romance will have readers feeling everything – the pain of the past, the heartache and longing of the present, and hope for the future.
Part of what makes this story great is the complexity of the characters. Shane is a good man – kind, brave, and protective. He has a sense of honor, and he has found his home and place in the family ranch. Although, he has found his “home” there, there is still a piece of him that has been missing for years. As the past is revealed, through alternating between the present and the past with flashbacks, readers come to fully understand his decisions and reasoning, making them root for him to get his second chance from Rachel.
Rachel is a character I wasn’t expecting. As her past is revealed, readers will come to admire her for her strength and perseverance. They understand her motivation for fleeing the town and not returning, as well as her desire to make this new place her home. Of all the characters, she deserves that happy ending, and readers will desperately hope she gets it by the end of the story.
This second chance romance is one of the best stories I have read from Karina Halle. Readers will feel every single emotion these two characters feel. They feel the purity and hope of young love, and the way she describes it has readers reliving all the same moments and connecting with these characters. In the present they feel the still omnipresent passion that sparks between them, leaving an immense desire for them to reignite. Finally, her plot choice to give them their HEA will not only have readers biting their nails, but it will also have the characters as well as readers gaining new perspective of what matters most in life.
Wild Card is another fantastic start to this series of standalones. Readers will love the town with its majestic views and the people in it as much as Rachel and Shane, and I’m excited for Mav and Fox’s stories
ARC received in exchange for an honest review.
Wild Card is a standalone novel and the first book in the North Ridge Trilogy about rough and rugged Canadian mountain men, the Nelson brothers. Canada’s never felt so hot.
She swore she’d never go back home.
She swore she’d never see the man who broke her all those years ago.
But you don’t always get to choose your path.
And sometimes that path is as wild and rugged as the heart.
Rachel Waters thought she saw the last of the small mountain town of North Ridge, British Columbia, when she left six years ago. But while her advertising career blossomed beneath the skyscrapers of Toronto, her mother’s sudden illness has the 26-year old returning to North Ridge to care for her, putting her career on hold while dealing with family secrets, regrets and unresolved goodbyes.
Shane Nelson has always been a bit of a wild card. The youngest of three brothers, Shane’s spent most of his life being underestimated and misunderstood. With his quiet intensity, classic good looks and thoughtful demeanor, he’s an enigma on horseback, managing his father’s sprawling ranch on the slopes of North Ridge.
But while Shane remains the quintessential brooding cowboy, complete with an arsenal of inner demons, all of that changes when Rachel steps back into his life.
She was the girl he pushed away.
Now she’s the girl who wishes she could leave.
Despite the odds, Shane will do everything to convince Rachel he needs a second chance that he doesn’t deserve but when the two of them head off into the wilderness together in search of lost cattle, more than just their hearts are at stake.
Whether it’s love or lives on the line, one thing is for sure: always bet on the wild card.
