 My musings…

Alex Winslow. I am not sure that there has been a man in the romance world as complicated as this one. He is the definition of complex, and yet L.J. Shen finds a way to make this absolute a**hole vulnerable and redeemable somehow.  By the end of the novel, instead of hating him, readers root for him to get it together and pursue his happily ever after.

So how does L.J. Shen makes us love a man who, at the beginning of the novel, seem vindictive and bit childish with his tantrums when he doesn’t get his way?

His past, as it is revealed to us in snippets, makes him a sympathetic character. We see how Alex has been taken advantage of by everyone in his life: the suits, his fellow band mates, and even his family.  Everyone takes what they want from him without any type of consideration for him or his feelings.  After years of this, is it any wonder that he has become jaded and questions the motivations of everyone he comes in contact with. It affects his ability to have real and functional relationships with anyone. He has been broken repeatedly, and his heart has been pieced together all wonky.  As a result, even when he lashes out at Indie and says the meanest things to her, I get it.  I see the pain hidden beneath the shards of his soul. His plan to use her just the way he is used by everyone else is what he knows, and the fact that he is denied nothing, makes his behavior, abhorrent yet understandable.  In fact, it makes me want to take him in my arms and hold him tight, to show him what he is worth.

Alex’s passion for music is another trait that makes me all swoony over him. This man loves the stage, his fans, and the music, especially that guitar. The moments in the hallway writing with Indie are some of the most intimate and raw moments between these two, and it is when we get to see the humanity in him. We get to see that there is something below the childish behavior, his broken pieces. The chemistry between them literally sizzles and crackles.  I could feel it buzz over my own skin every single time they met in the hallway, increasing with each encounter. I fell in love with him every single time he exposed the tiniest fissure in his soul, and I desperately wanted him to let Indie be his glue and patch him up.

As with any Shen hero, Alex in the bedroom is lethal. His mouth had me blushing with all its vulgarity, but, Lord, did I crave that dirty talk of his.  Every single time they touched, electricity buzzed through the room, a palpable sensation I felt that I could reach out and touch. As the novel progresses, the emotion seeps into the physicality of their relationship as he evolves and starts the very slow process of changing and growing, becoming much more than the broken prince he has been.

Something that I love about his man is his candor. He holds nothing back. While this characteristic, more times than not, casts him in a bad light, I respected his need for zero bull****. He says what he wants, he is open with Indie from day one about his intentions for her, and he is painfully honest about his feelings for everyone and everything. Sure, he plays games in the beginning, but it is part of the challenge he laid down to Indie when they first meet.  His need to be truthful, though, continues, even as his character evolves, and it eventually makes me want to weep for him as he realizes the damage and hurt he has caused in the wake of all his bad decisions.  It is what causes him to flay himself open to her at the end of the novel, really putting the final nail in the coffin when it comes to my devotion to this man.

The final part of this man that solidifies that underneath the surface is a man so incredibly worthy of love is his reaction after the climax of the story. For the first time, we see a man, one no longer behaving in a childish manner.  His ownership of his role in the events of the story, his dedication to finally commit to getting better, and his attempts to win her back, exemplify his true feelings for Indie, and they show how this once immature and selfish man has become more. He is no longer the disillusioned broken prince but is making his way to being a king who can be worthy of his queen.

The complexity of this man knows no bounds. Every page peels back another layer, and with each one exposed, L.J. Shen shows how this man, who on the surface is selfish and immature, is in fact damaged and broken, yet worthy of love.

Because music and lyrics are not only an integral part of Alex’s character but also the relationship between Alex and Indie, below is a Valentine’s Playlist from Alex to Indie, one he would use to express his love for her.

Synopsis:

It should have been easy.

I needed the money. He needed a babysitter to keep him from snorting himself to death.

I was cherry-picked especially for him. Responsible. Optimistic. Warm. Innocent.

The worst part is that I should have known better.

Alex Winslow. British rock star. Serial heartbreaker. Casanova with whiskey eyes.

“Don’t get near the devil in a leather jacket. He’ll chew you up and spit you out.”

Sounds familiar? That’s because it was a headline in a tabloid the second time he got arrested.

Guess what? I didn’t listen.

I signed the contract.

World tour. Three months. Four Continents. One hundred shows.

My name is Indigo Bellamy, and I sold my soul to a tattooed god.

Problem was, my soul wasn’t enough for Alex Winslow. He ended up taking my body, too.

Then he took my heart.

Then he took my all.
