4.5 My Heart Almost Didn’t Survive It CROWNS
Pam Godwin effectively stripped my heart down, shaving little slivers off piece by piece with each word and chapter she wrote, and I read a good portion of this book with tears threatening to spill over, often wondering how much could a group of people be forced to endure. Like the characters, though, we endure, because the story we get is riveting and filled with so many more layers and complexities than I ever could have expected.
Jake, even in his teens, could quite possibly be one of the best boyfriends to exist. He is kind, thoughtful, compassionate, takes care of his girl, and like any exceptional romance novel, no matter how outlandish, he has skills in the bedroom are top notch to the extreme. I’m fanning myself just reliving it. His protective nature tends to have a more aggressive streak that doesn’t seem to fit with his peaceful and loving nature, but it doesn’t come out unless it is tied to Conor and is consistent with his character for the entirety of the novel. What really made me fall in love with him, though, is the way he heals Conor, even when he hurts her, it is for her. Everything he does is for her, so even his most depraved acts drew me in.
My heart for Conor really reaches unparalleled levels. Truly. Without giving too much away, I was so impressed with her strength. The trauma she suffers, the way she chooses to hold herself together, the mask she shows to the world all just exemplifies the fortitude she possesses. I can see why Jake loves her, why Jarrett and Lorne also work so hard to protect her. There is something good about her, and I found joy in her finding her way back to it because it was hard fought for.
The entire cast of characters from this series is phenomenal. I love Jarrett and Lorne just as much as Conor and Jake. I am already dying for their stories, to see how they are going to play out. It is a need, now. They are all so broken, and I love flawed characters who get their HEAs, even more when it is a dirty and dangerous fight. I need it for every single one of them.
This story was completely unexpected. I absolutely never saw it coming. NEVER. I was held captive by the plot from chapter 2, and with each suspenseful moment that unfurled, these four held me tighter in their grasps. I’m sure that there will be people who struggle with the opening scenes and the subsequent choices of the characters, but their choices as a reaction to the miscarriage of justice and betrayal of people who were supposed to love them makes me completely okay with their choices. Plus, the chemistry and devotion that emanates from Conor and Jake is just too delicious and tantalizing. I couldn’t walk away from them or their story.
Pam Godwin delivers more than an erotic and suspenseful romance with Knotted. It is story you live, emotion vibrating through your bones. You don’t watch the story play out in front of you, you experience each moment. Her words vividly paint all the intimate and harrowing details, and I was enraptured by this bond between friends, the pure love between Conor and Jake, and the quest for retribution.

I try to forget her.
Growing up together, Conor and I shared all our firsts.
First love, first kiss, first…
Not all our firsts.
We were sixteen the night she was violently assaulted while I helplessly watched.
I’ll never forget the sounds of her suffering.
Or my inconsolable agony when she left Oklahoma.
Years later, she returns to honor our teenage pact.
Except the boy she loved is gone, replaced by a ruthless cattle rancher knotted with secrets.
She doesn’t know my dark cravings or the trails of sin that lead to her.
I don’t deserve her, but one truth remains.
