To marry or not to marry Boston’s favorite villain?
The Villain, an all-new dark and decadent love story from USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author L.J. Shen is available now!
5 Scarred Hearts
GAH! The Villain has taken over The Hunter, and I’m not even sorry about it. This hero, while apathetic and depraved, stole my heart. The heroine is absolutely PERFECT for him, and, once again, L.J. Shen has a delivered a novel that exemplifies that love is a transformative and beautiful part of life, even if the process to get there is fraught with turmoil.
Cillian is flawed perfection. He is as cold and calculating as we hoped he would be, but what I really loved is the why behind it. I never expected it from Shen, and I live for the unexpected. The motivation behind his actions, the reason for his callousness is original, and the way she wove it seamlessly into the plot only serves to make me love the overall story even more.
Persephone couldn’t have been more perfect for this hero. She is tough when she needs to be and soft when it is required. Her compassion and heart is her biggest strength. No one could have done for our hero what she did for him. I loved her, every single part of her. She has a backbone of steal with a heart so pure.
Their chemistry is superb – the push and pull and the all the angst. Their physical chemistry is some of the hottest we have seen from LJ Shen. The evolution of their relationship is so much more than just physical, it is a tiny component of who these two come to be because of the way they love each other. They both transform because they want to be better for each other.
I truly love this story. The secondary plot line woven through the romance is complimentary and added another layer, making this so much more than a standard romance (I can’t say more for spoiler reasons). The Villain still has all the signature attributes of a Shen novel, though – the humor, the swoon worthy moments, the steam, and the symbolic elements. And that HEA? It was worth every moment of angst this story puts you through.
The Villain is another consuming read, and, if I’m being honest, the Boston Belles world is rivaling the SOS world for me. I love the decadence of the society, the angst of each story, the romance, the symbolism, the cast of flawed characters who deny love or are on the search for it, and this couple gave us all of the above. It was an unexpected journey that tore my heart apart in the best possible away.
EARLY ARC Review
4 Bleeding Heart Crowns
LJ has this undeniable way of pulling me straight into her stories, right from the start I’m there lost to her words and her unique characters and this story is no different. Cillian Fitzpatrick is so much more than you could ever imagine and delving into the person that he is was irrefutably worth the trip. This man is layers upon layers in the most intoxicating way.
I was not ready for the man that Cillian is, in my mind I had him pegged a certain way and I’m so glad that my first impression was so very wrong. I have a soft spot for Villains no doubt and Cillian has been added to my list of all time favorites. This man hides who he is underneath levels of anger and disdain but given the cards he was dealt and his ass of a father and non-existent mother it’s to be expected. Where Hunter went the opposite way and acted out getting in all kinds of trouble. Cillian took his fathers need of perfection to the next level. Never allowing himself to look weak and vulnerable to the detriment of his mental and physical health.
Persephone was also so much more than I thought. I only had a small inkling of who she was from The Hunter, so I didn’t really know much. But seeing the person she is solidifies that her and Cillian are perfect together. She may not be as crass and outgoing as her sister Emmabelle but she is no less strong and determined. She was dealt some crappy hands in her life and she made do with what she had. She always put others first and has a heart of gold, but underneath all the grace and kindness is a spine made of steel. She never coward to Cillian and she may have lost direction a little in not knowing what she deserved but she found her way back.
I know there are some people who were not happy with the reveal of Persephone being the heroine in this book. But I can honestly say I think they are right together. I put my trust and faith that LJ knows who ultimately fits with whom and she has never let me down. This couple are two pieces of the same soul, they add so much more to the other, each being a necessary piece to the other’s puzzle. LJ did right by this story especially after getting more of Emmabelles personality her and Cillian never would have worked together and I for one am glad it ended up being Persephone. Bravo LJ on another spectacular read that is sure to make even the most jaded of readers a believer in your direction.

To play, to mold, to break.
Too bad Cillian forgot one, tiny detail.
