 My musings…

4 Seductive CROWNS

Let’s be honest. Love triangles are a hard trope for me.  So much so, that I usually avoid them all together.  I find the characters and their choices frustrating, it is usually clear from the beginning who the heroine will end up with, and there is so much unneeded angst and heartbreak.  Pam Godwin’s One is a Promise, book one in the Tangled Lies series, is going to fall into a different category.  Never once did I not understand character choices, never once is it clear who she ends up with (it is book one of three), and the angst is what one would expect from the events of the story.  I am really excited to see where she takes readers over the next two books.

One of the reasons this story works so well is because of the choices she makes for her characters.  Cole, Trace, and Danni all are shown to be likable characters.  However, Danni, more than the men in her life, is shown to passionate, vibrating with life, and she has a heart of gold, often witnessing her care for others over herself.  Just like the two men in her life, her passion in dance suffuses into all other aspects of her life, and she yearns to live fully in immersed in love.  The passion that she feels for each of these men is genuine and real, and, for those readers who care, there is absolutely no cheating at all in this book.  These are three people that end up in a horrific situation that I wouldn’t know how to handle either, making Danni, Cole, and Trace completely sympathetic characters.

This plot is riddled with angst, but deservedly so.  There is loss and healing, pain and love, but more than anything this story is seductive and passionate.  By moving the reader from the past and the present, Pam Godwin not only makes the reader fall in love with the whirlwind romance and consuming relationship between Cole and Danni, but she also gets the reader to love Trace and Danni and their often volatile and difficult, yet incredibly passionate courtship and love.  The plot choices she makes to get the readers to love both men and both couples is obvious from the beginning; however, it is the only choice to get readers to be torn over this decision as much as Danni is. This is truly I story that I don’t know where the author is going to take me, and while I know I will be incredibly happy with who she chooses, I also know that my heart will be crushed at the same time by who she leaves behind.

This is my first book by Pam Godwin, although I own five of them, and this story is one that hits you in the heart HARD!  Be prepared to love them all.  Be prepared for the heartache.  Be prepared to be consumed just like Danni.  You won’t be able to resist.
