#Review “After the Fall” by Giana Darling

AFTER THE FALL (The Fallen Men #4) by Giana Darling Release Date: March 13th

Aundi’s Musings…

5 Corrupted Crowns

This book is something else entirely. Giana has this whimsical way with words that has them slowly twisting and wrapping around every vital piece of you until her stories become a part of your soul. I was beyond elated when Giana said she was coming out with more Fallen Men books and completely beside myself when I found out this next installment was about King and his Iron Queen Cressida.

I knew how she would taste just lookin’ at her, somethin’ hot and heady, potent like whiskey.

King is a book boyfriend that trumps all other book boyfriends. This man with his sexy possessiveness and lyrical way with words is enough to make even a nun blush. Everything about this man speaks to me on a level unlike any before. Throughout this whole book you don’t once question his love and loyalty not only to the Fallen but to Cressida. Everyday he makes her feel his undying love and possession of her heart and soul and it leaves you in a puddle of mush Every. Single. Time. The passion and connection between them is thick and intense with a heady combination of lust, love and ownership, King is owned body and soul by Cressida and vice versa.

“There’s no end to my love for you. It’s woven into the very fabric of my soul so even wen out bodies die, we’ll still never stop lovin’.”

I loved seeing Cressida come into her own as the Iron Queen to his Fallen King. She is strength and passion personified. This woman has accepted who she is unabashedly and fallen into her knew life with an enthusiasm and grace that only she possesses. Cressida looks fear in the eye over and over and you can’t help but be standing in her corner cheering her on throughout every obstacle she faces. And her endless love for King is so immense and all-consuming you can’t help but feel it pour from the pages in an endless stream and wash over your skin warming you from the inside out with it.

Because that’s what King did for me. He sucked the poison out of me with his lips, his teeth, and his tongue.

This story will have you feverishly going through every single emotion leaving you in a puddle of unending tears with the feelings it stirs in you. Giana has created magic with these Fallen Men, taking you on a journey that your heart isn’t prepared for but that your soul desperately needs. Each new book in this series feels like coming home, welcoming you with open arms and embracing you with the magic that is specific and special to Giana. I devoured this book cover to cover in one sitting and honestly cannot wait to see where she takes us next with these beautifully Fallen Men.

Tricia’s Musings…

3.5 Biker poet CROWNS

Whilst it’s always great to dive back into the world of the Fallen, I’m a little conflicted with my thoughts on After the Fall. I have to say the story itself was beautifully written, King’s poems to Cressida were swoon worthy, in fact the majority of the book had a rather lovely lyrical feel to it.

The problem I had was I didn’t feel like the first two thirds of the story really told us anything new about this couple. They’re still madly in love, their chemistry and steamy times are off the scale and King worships Cressida and the ground she walks on. Whilst it was lovely to see that his support and adoration allowed her to be her true self, to move forward with strength and confidence, none of this was really a surprise to me.

I was also a little disappointed, as after the cliffhanger at the end of Good Gone Bad, I hoped this book would pick up the story and dive back in where it left off with the action packed scenarios we’ve come to expect of this series. That’s not the case here and in fact it took quite some time to catch up with the events in that previous book. It wasn’t until the last third that I started to have a sense of foreboding, that “something wicked this way comes” and I got those edge of the seat moments, the danger and drama I was craving. I must admit, there were parts towards the end of the book that moved me to tears. I do absolutely adore the emotions, the love, that sense of friendship and family that’s infused throughout the story, and even more so in the aftermath of some dark and tragic events. These bikers may be unorthodox and unconventional, but they’re family all the same. As King himself says;

“Family isn’t in the blood. It’s the echo of each name That sounds with the beat of your heart”

After the Fall may be a mixed bag for me, but I still very much enjoy this author’s writing style, her fallen men and their women and I’m excited to see what life has in store for them all next.

Sarah’s Musings…

3.5 Poetic CROWNS

I kept going back and forth with this one. I love the Fallen, I love Welcome to the Dark Side and Good Gone Bad (both stand-alones), and I love Giana’s style of writing and weaving of mythology and classics into her writing. I live for it.

There are parts here that really dragged for me, which I attribute to the synopsis. It didn’t seem to match the story I read. And while I like King and Cress, I don’t have the emotional investment in them as I do in the other characters and them as a couple. If you love this couple, I would imagine that you will eat up every moment, but the poetic, enamored love between them slowed the story down for me. There is also a lot of rehashing of events from previous books which led to some more slower paced moments, and there wasn’t really any growth or development in them as individuals or couples. It was really more of their HEA for the first 70% of the book. I expected more action, more war, more something. Even the ending felt very rushed and left me wanting more. The best part of the book was the last 30%. I needed more of that.

What I did love, as I said before, is seeing the Fallen brotherhood. I live for this world and the men and women in it. The sense of family that they have and the love they feel for each other is every single thing. Giana’s style of writing gives me all the smutty romance I love mixed with the classics. I just eat up her writing, the poetic, lyrical quality and they way she can make you feel what the characters feel is a quality few have.

While this one wasn’t my favorite, I would imagine fans of the series and this couple will love it.

I was settin’ up to live a good life, the kinda life I’d fought hard to deserve.

With a good woman––the best woman––at my side, a degree under my belt, and the whole world at my feet, I was livin’ the kinda happily ever after usually denied the rebellious and the criminal. I’d turned my back on that kinda life, thinkin’ I needed that clean, wholesome kinda happy.

Then the devil came dressed in the wings of an angel and took someone from me.

And I realized I was wrong.

There was no clean and wholesome for a man like me with poetry in his heart and outlaw in his blood. The life I’d been livin’ was only purgatory, holding me over until the time came for me to descend into Hell and pick up the tarnished crown that awaited me.

I was condemning my woman to a life of violence, blood, and heartache, but I had to hope she’d step up and finally be the rough and tumble queen to my Fallen MC king.

*After the Fall can be read as a stand-alone romance, but you first meet the couple in Lessons in Corruption (The Fallen Men, #1)* (less)
