When I saw that there was going to be a second-generation series for Trinity Academy I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. And Michelle did not disappoint. This is a story about loss and how grief can make you do things you never imagined. It’s the process of healing and righting the wrongs that you have done to those you love, because you knew they could weather the pain and you needed someone to lash out at.

In this book friends become enemies due to unforeseen circumstances and it’s that journey of enemies to something more that we are here for. Jade suffers an imaginable loss and she doesn’t really know how to process it. She’s young when it happens at only 16. But she lashes out takes her grief and anger out on Hunter. He’s there and he’s an easy target because they are such good friends and they have a special connection. Jade holds onto her anger for years against Hunter because it’s easier than really trying to process why such a tragic thing happened. It’s only when she finally starts Trinity and is faced with seeing Hunter daily that she has to come to terms with her feelings and actually start to deconstruct why she has internalized so much anger, especially once the truth is revealed about that dreadful night.

Hunter doesn’t truly understand why Jade has decided to be so cruel to him and cut him down every chance she gets. But he lets her because he knows that she is grieving something that he could never imagine. However, eventually he’s had enough and to be honest I’m surprised it took him 2 years to finally be done. He puts up with years of verbal assaults from Jade trying to get her to explain to him why she doesn’t believe him. He tries repeatedly to tell her and talk to her but she doesn’t hear anything he has to say. Until the truth is revealed but by then it’s been too long and Hunter has had enough. He doesn’t want her apologies he doesn’t want anything to do with her. And I can’t blame him, I get that she was young and everyone grieves differently, but what she put him through was beyond anything anyone should have to tolerate.

This is the first book in this Next Generation series, all these characters have grown-up together and their friendships and links are all deep and strong. I’m interested to see where she takes the other stories as she gives you some Easter Eggs in this book regarding other relationships. I do wish I had gotten more of the connection between Hunter and Jade most of the story is her being furious and nasty to him, so I didn’t really get time to see that there was more there and I missed that. Especially with an enemies to lover’s type situation I really need to feel the connection, I want it burned into my soul, in order for me to forgive all the terrible things done. All in all I enjoyed this book I loved seeing all the kids grown-up and then catching glimpses of their parents.

Everything changed the night my boyfriend died.
What should’ve been the most special moment of my life turned into a nightmare. Because of Hunter Chargill, I lost the love of my life. I’ll never forgive him.
Hunter used to be one of my best friends but it turns out he’s nothing more than an arrogant a-hole determined to make my life a living hell with his lies.
But he should’ve known you can’t break something that’s already broken.

I manage to avoid him until my freshman year at Trinity Academy. Our cruel words and intimidating touches quickly spark a flame and instead of us going down in a blaze of hatred, desire sizzles to life.
I know I’m in trouble when I start enjoying our fights. Instead of wanting to punch him, I find myself wondering what his lips would feel like on mine.

A stupid game. One kiss. And my perfectly constructed walls come crashing down around me.
I should feel guilty and make Hunter pay for what he’s done.
But sometimes a tormentor turns out to be a protector.

Coldhearted Heir is a stand-alone, College Romance. It deals with a sensitive subject.
