CONVICT (Sin City Salvation #2) by A. Zavarelli
Release Date: July 22nd
Convict is book two of this interconnected series and is Ace and Birdie’s story. Birdie is Gypsy’s sister from Confess and, whilst it’s not strictly necessary as you do get a quick catch up, I believe you’d be better invested if you read Confess first.
Ace was so much more of a tortured hero than I was expecting. Although he’s the member of an MC, this book is really about the relationship between him and Birdie and not about Club business. He started out as something of an enigma but as his story unfolded and once his traumatic past was revealed, my heart broke for him. He’s never had love in his life, never felt loved or cared for and he doesn’t know what to do with his feelings for Birdie. He’s rough and ready and I felt sometimes a little regimented and heavy handed in his approach, but he has a true heart and always the best of intentions. He’s a protector but oh boy does he have his hands full trying to rein Birdie in. It would be easy to get the wrong impression of Birdie and I wasn’t sure about her at first. She’s independent but also rather volatile and impetuous a lot of the time. Having had her choices taken away from her in the past, and having only had her sister to rely on, now she’s fending for herself she doesn’t appreciate having her wings clipped. However, underneath the tough exterior, and the spoilt girl vibe she exudes, lies a vulnerable young woman. She’s hiding a big secret from those closest to her a situation she is determined to deal with on her own.
For me, Convict was a book of two halves. It started out fairly slow, with a lot of push and pull between Ace and Birdie which lay the foundations for their relationship. About half way through there was a change of pace and I really felt the connection between them. Both victims of their pasts, both rather broken, nevertheless they are survivors and they clung to each other, physically and emotionally. This is also when the danger, mystery and intrigue ramped up and there were some twists and turns and edge of the seat moments I loved. Whilst not quite as dark as previous books I’ve read by this author, it’s not a light read by any means and there’s certainly violence and cruel behaviour metered out by some pretty vile characters. But this is not a book about violence. It’s about love and healing, putting others before yourself whilst trying to move on from the past, and finally, hopefully, finding a place you can call home.
5 Convicted CROWNS
This story grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let you go. You’re thrust into a world full of danger and suspense, I loved every minute of this wild ride. Bridie and Ace are perfection together and I could not get enough. I literally read this story in one sitting. Once you start you won’t be able to put it down.
“Las Vegas was a melting pot of lost souls.”
Birdie is a fiercely complicated character. She is forced to be a con just like her sister. Not because she wants to but because she has no other choice. She is trying to protect her sister the way her sister tried to protect her. Birdie is broken and lost just trying to do what she thinks is right, with the hand that she has been dealt in this life. She crafted her life in such a way that no one gets through her walls and into her heart. Her sister Gypsy thinks that she is just being reckless because she doesn’t understand that Birdie is shielding her from the truth. Due to this, Gypsy enlists the help of quiet, formidable Ace to watch over her.
“She’s practically raised me. I looked up to her. I admired her. And the only reason I knew I was capable of loving anyone in this world was because I loved her fiercely.”
Ace is fighting his own demons. He worked hard to overcome his tragic gut-wrenching past and have some semblance of a life. He now has his MC brother’s and his strict routine that keeps him grounded and keeps him from slipping into the darkness. He’s than tasked to watch over Birdie. She takes his oh so carefully constructed existence and rips it apart. And in return Ace slowly tears down the walls she has created.
“I tried to shrug him off, but he didn’t budge. He was completely grounded, and I was rootless. Beneath the intensity of his shadowy gaze, I felt the armor I’d forged so carefully disintegrating.”
The chemistry between Birdie and Ace is undeniable and immediate. From the moment they meet they are drawn to each other. Even when Ace is watching her from a distance it’s as if she can feel his eyes on her, all the hairs on her neck start to tingle. Ace tries to deny it he tries to stay away thinking it’s better for her. But he doesn’t realize they need each other in all ways. They understand the other’s darkness and they accept it and embrace it. When they finally succumb to their passion, it is burning your Kindle HOT, HOT, HOT!!! You can practically feel the heat coming off the pages.
“A lucid dream in which his calloused fingers twisted in my hair while I drank the smoke from his lips and tasted the fire in his lungs.”
My soul ached for these two lost souls. Every knew detail about their pasts shredded a bit more of my heart. But watching as they grew together and healed each other put those pieces back together. Ashleigh created an alluring love story full of action and suspense, with her own brand of darkness that we love. You will not be disappointed this story will give you all the feels and then some.
