Shantel takes us on an unexpected journey of recovery and the power and strength of family. Embedded in the depths of the seedy underground of Vegas lies the heart and soul of Kingdom and the intricacy of those that run it. Grave does not disappoint with its heat and heart that will have your soul aching for these characters and their unexpected journey.
Grave has always had a death wish, hence the name. He is an adrenaline junky but more than that he is trying to bury all of his feelings. Other’s would say that he feels nothing, but those closest to him know that he actually feels everything and that is why he choosing to be numb to the things around him. Grave makes poor choices in basically all aspects of his life and it’s not until his unforeseen encounter with April does he finally take a look at himself and see what he’s doing. Grave was surprisingly sweet and caring he always opened the door for her and made her laugh. And you could feel the connection between them every time they are together and the heat and chemistry between them is Off. The. Charts. HOT!!!!
April the girl has given up so much in order for her to be there to take care of her brother. She’s trying to be not only a mom to him but to try and financially take care of him with the flower shop that her mother left them. It’s not until her brother gets into trouble and she has to figure out how to help him does she end up at Kingdom. April doesn’t really know much about the darker and grittier parts of Vegas she is content living in her own world and taking care of herself and her brother. But when she meets Grave all bets are off and she is all in, being thrust into a world that she knows little about. I loved that even though April had never been in this world before she effortlessly fits right in, not only with Grave but with the girls as well. She really is a strong person who expects to be treated the way she deserves and is unlike anyone Grave has been with before.
Shantel has taken us somewhere I was not prepared for, but loved every minute of. The complexity of Grave and the depth with which he hurts will make your heart physically wrench for him. I don’t know how many times I wanted to reach into this book and hold him through his demons, that’s how deep in the story I was. Shantel has crafted something so layered and dimensional that you can’t help but get lost in the world that is Kingdom!

My life went to hell years ago, and I’ve had a death wish since then with fast cars, women, and drugs. They don’t call me Grave for nothing! But I do it because I need to feel something… anything. What’s life worth living for without the high? And then I saw her! She’s too good for me, and I should stay away. But like any addict, I switch one drug for another, and I’ll be taking her to hell with me.
I’m anything but sweet, despite what people think, so when he tells me I’m too good for him and I’m better off without him, I don’t listen. My life was simple before Grave stepped through that door, but who wants simple? He makes me feel alive. It only took one touch, and I became addicted! But therein lies the problem. Addiction is Grave’s middle name, and when he tells me he’s taking me to hell with him, I don’t know whether to take that as a threat or a promise!
