5 He wasn’t mine, but I was his CROWNS
The Jack and Jill series by Jewel E. Ann is my favorite and the first books from this author that I read. I loved them so much that I was beyond excited to discover she was writing another book, a continuation as it were, of this incredible series. For those who haven’t read Jack and Jill, Out of Love can be read as a stand-alone, but for those of us who have, I have to say Jewel did us proud. It is a fitting sequel and brought back all the wonderfully angsty, heartbreaking and joyous feelings she drew out of me when I first read the original trilogy. If you haven’t read Jack and Jill yet, I can guarantee you’re going to want to go and read it once you’ve finished Out of Love. Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
I generally spend far too long wondering how on earth I’m going to write a review that does justice to this author’s superb writing skills without running out of adjectives before I’ve finished. Her talent and imagination when it comes to her stories has always blown me away and Out of Love is no exception. Wonderful characters and a hugely intriguing plot, with twists and turns and bombshell revelations had me glued to the pages. Livy and Slade are both remarkable in their own right. Livy, the tenacious, free spirited surfboarder and Slade, the darker, brooding mystery man are like night and day, so different yet somehow so alike. Together I just knew they’d set the world on fire. To say their journey is not an easy one is an understatement and my heart broke for them, and quite frankly for myself too. Reminders of the past gave me goosebumps and the need to ugly cry was real on more than one occasion. Truth be told, I couldn’t love this book more.
I should’ve been prepared, but I wasn’t. I should’ve known that Jewel would take my heart out of my chest and squeeze the living daylights out of it before shoving it back in again. It’s what she does best and it’s magnificent.
Conspiracies. Corruption. Serial killers.
You name it—I’m fascinated by it. My mom always blamed my overly curious and highly suspicious mind on my dad.
My incredibly overbearing dad.
Mr. No One Is Good Enough For My Daughter has been terrifying my dates since I turned fifteen.
College is my chance to be free from his control and date any guy I want.
I’m absolutely certain he would hate Slade Wylder—almost as certain as I am that I do too.
Since when have I shied away from trouble?
Slade fascinates me. He lives in a house I’m certain is haunted. His dog is trained as well as any guard I’ve ever seen. Rumor on campus is that he deals drugs. It would explain a lot.
But it doesn’t explain why he saves me from my darkest moment.
It doesn’t explain why I can’t stop thinking about him.
And the explanation I finally discover is far more dangerous than any rumor.

“I’m trying really hard to be…” his lips twisted “…amicable and persuasive.
”Pushing the wetsuit down to my hips, I glanced up. “Amicable? What exactly is the alternative to you being amicable with me?”
He squinted against the sun, peering over my shoulder for a few moments. “You’re the straight-A student. You tell me, what’s the opposite of amicable?”
Crossing my arms over my chest, I trapped my lip between my teeth, until he returned his focus to me. “Unfriendly. Hostile. Are you suggesting if I don’t go home with you now, things will get unfriendly? Hostile?”
About Jewel E. Ann
Jewel is a free-spirited romance junkie with a quirky sense of humor.
With 10 years of flossing lectures under her belt, she took early retirement from her dental hygiene career to stay home with her three awesome boys and manage the family business.
After her best friend of nearly 30 years suggested a few books from the Contemporary Romance genre, Jewel was hooked. Devouring two and three books a week but still craving more, she decided to practice sustainable reading, AKA writing.
When she’s not donning her cape and saving the planet one tree at a time, she enjoys yoga with friends, good food with family, rock climbing with her kids, watching How I Met Your Mother reruns, and of course…heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, panty-scorching novels.
