Aundi’s Musings…

5 Carys like Paris Crowns

This was an exquisitely written heart-warming tale of acceptance and redemption, Deacon and Carys will steal your heart from the moment they first meet until the last sentence of this book. The journey that they take is written with such grace and care that you can’t help but fall in love with these beautifully broken but endearing characters.

Carys is a young single mom just trying to make it. After a terrible accident took her dream away she has been forced to reevaluate what she is going to do with her life. I can’t imagine being that young and having your dreams crushed before they ever really had the chance to take off. But she conquers each battle with poise and dignity. She finds herself pregnant and alone due to the fact her ex is a deadbeat but she takes on the role of motherhood effortlessly. I loved this woman’s strength of not only character but of her soul. She could have crumbled multiple times but she doesn’t, she stands strong and makes something of herself and where she’s at in life.

Deacon is Carys’s neighbor and resident manwhore, seeing as the reason they started talking to each other is due to the fact that he was banging someone next door too loud and kept her awake. I loved that Carys confronted him about it and Deacon actually look embarrassed by the situation. He could have easily wrote her off as a snob or prude but he doesn’t. Instead the strike up and unlikely friendship that will have you laughing at Deacon’s antics, but also salivating at the amount of sexual tension coursing between them. I died for Deacon he has to be one of my favorite book boyfriends of the year no question. The way he loves not only Carys but her daughter Sunny will melt your heart into a puddle.

This story is without a doubt a MUST READ of 2020, the connection that these two find is beautiful and uplifting. Deacon and Carys share something that most people never find, is it easy for them to get there, No. But it is a journey well worth reading. You’ll be rooting for them throughout even when they hit rough waters, you will always want them to be together. This book had me laughing out loud and tearing up at the same time. Penelope opens your eyes to situations you may not have ever thought of and has you evaluating the way you see life and people in it. My heart was full after I was done and honestly I can’t wait to read it again. These characters will stay with me forever.

Sarah’s Musings…

4 Monkey Ball CROWNS

The Anti-Boyfriend by Penelope Ward is a solid read – good plot, likable characters, solid story-line.

Overall, I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. Their meet cute was great, and Deacon actions make him immediately likable. He has the playboy with the kind heart, although the playboy aspect is in short supply.

Caris is also very likable. She is a good mom, and I love that she always has her best interest at heart.

The story was good, entertaining. I liked the conflict and the resolution. It was solid, well paced. There was something that just didn’t click for me. It did have that “can’t put it down” feel to it.

Fans of Penelope Ward will love it, and new ones will as well, but I’ve definitely loved her previous books more than this. The Anti-Boyfriend was just missing the “oomph” for me.

ARC Review

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me.

Sure, he was great-looking and friendly.

But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me awake while he “entertained” them.

As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it.

So, finally it was my turn.

When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my door.

Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her…she eventually fell asleep in his arms.

Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr. Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.

After that night, we became friends.

He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.

But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer.

Until one night we crossed the line.

Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.

I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids.

I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.

He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”

Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?
