Sarah’s Musings…

4.5 Risky CROWNS

As with any Elle Kennedy book, readers expect great banter, steamy chemistry, a cast of fantastic secondary characters, and excellent writing, and readers absolutely get all that and more with the second installment of the Briar U series.

Normally, heroes are the characters who make the story for me, but in this case Brenna stole the show for me. I absolutely loved her attitude. She was the perfect blend of tough outside shell and vulnerable interior that makes her relatable and lovable. Her conflict and struggle in the story, while being one we have seen before in other romances, still read as unique and authentic for Brenna and her father. She was really one of my favorite parts of the book.

Jake was a great hero, too, but I think I needed more of him in the story. The previous series, told from the pov of the heroes, had me loving each and every one as well as the heroines, but in this case I didn’t feel the same attraction or connection to him. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Jake. I LOVED him. I just wanted more of him.

The story is another plus for me. There is the perfect balance of college life, drama, and comic relief. The pacing is perfect, and I was engaged from the beginning to the end.  The chemistry between Brenna and Jake is another reason this story kept me entertained. They had great banter and physical chemistry, which always catapults a couple, for me, into the must read category. While the conflict fits with the plot of the story and is resolved well, the inner conflict of Jake felt a bit weak and the main conflict facing his character was strong enough to stand on its own. It ultimately didn’t hinder my love for this couple or their story.

Elle Kennedy continues to prove why she is powerhouse author in the NA sports romance genre. I just don’t think she can write a bad book in this series. It is always a must read right now kind of book.

The RiskSynopsis:

Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.

And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.

I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.

For every fake date…he wants a real one.

Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.

That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.
